How much is transfer duty?

No transfer duty is payable on properties up to R1 210 000. Above that, the rate increases in steps from 3% to 13%, as shown in the table below.

Who pays transfer duty?

The buyer pays it, through the transferring attorney, before the property can be registered in the buyer's name.

When is no transfer duty payable?

When the seller is a VAT vendor selling in the course of business, such as a developer selling a new unit, VAT is included in the price instead and no transfer duty is payable.

Are the attorney fees on this page exact?

No. Only transfer duty is a SARS figure. Conveyancing and bond registration fees, Deeds Office fees and sundries are estimates. Ask your conveyancer for a written quote.
